Seven MLS clubs continued their preseason preparations with matches on Thursday, Feb. 9.
Six of those teams squared off in three all-MLS matches, while FC Dallas faced traditional South American powerhouse River Plate down in Argentina.
Here is a rundown of Thursday's action:
Portland Timbers 3, Real Salt Lake 3
The Timbers got the high-scoring affair started with a first-half goal by Diego Valeri, who deposited home a rebound after an impressive save by RSL 'keeper Nick Rimando. But then the home team went down to 10 men, when referee Sorin Stoica showed Portland's Diego Chara a red card after formal video review indicated a violent conduct offense. RSL's Joao Plata scored on the ensuing free kick to tie the score at 1-1.
Valeri got his second of the night on a penalty kick just before halftime and Darren Mattocks made it 3-1 Portland right after the break. But two near identical goals from outside the box by Luke Mulholland and Omar Holness pulled RSL level against the 10-man Timbers.
