James Sands path from elite youth player to starting NYCFC center back
New York City FC 19-year-old defender James Sands’ ascension from academy player to starting center back for last season’s Eastern Conference regular season leaders is emblematic of a potential path to the pros Major League Soccer envisions for youth players throughout the country. Sands, who signed as the first Homegrown Player in club history in 2017 after two years in NYCFC’s academy, arrived to the club after spending five years with elite youth side New York Soccer Club.
Last week, Major League Soccer announced an
new elite youth development platform
with 95 participating academies across the country, including NYCFC and New York Soccer Club. The elite year-round competition will promote maximizing player’s potential with an emphasis on developing professional players in a similar path that Sands took to NYCFC.
Complementing the elite player pathway is a
partnership between MLS and the U.S. Youth Soccer Association (USYS)
that will focus on the individual player pathway, providing players with resources and a clear pathway regardless of their location or financial resources.

Sebastian Lletget – LA Galaxy midfielder
“I was really excited just to get back on the grass and get my senses back on the field. It was really nice to see my teammates as well from afar. It was tough and we’re ready to get back after it tomorrow.”
Luchi Gonzalez – FC Dallas head coach
“Everyone is at a different level, because we haven’t worked together, but similar levels. I see the majority of the group at a good level. And the ones that maybe aren’t at the best level, they’re not too far off, they’re going to get there soon. I think we’re in a good range for the circumstance. Whatever it is in the MLS schedule that we’ve got to be ready to compete for coming up, I think we’re going to be ready for that next step.”
Kendall Waston – FC Cincinnati defender
“Body is feeling all right because it’s not the same as practicing at home. Thankful for the training field and to run. At least you see your friends, your teammates and have a good day. I’m a bit tired, to be honest.”
