Matias Almeyda announced Wednesday he will remain the San Jose Earthquakes' head coach for the 2020 season, and he hopes the club's talisman returns as well.
At a press conference, the Argentine manager said forward Chris Wondolowski has an offer to play for the team in 2020, according to ESPN's Jeff Carlisle.
Pro Soccer USA's Robert Jonas reported that Wondolowski may not be a regular starter in the future, but Almeyda wants him to finish his career with the Earthquakes.
The 36-year-old was once again San Jose's leading scorer this season, with 15 goals in 32 league appearances, his 10th straight season of scoring at least 10 goals. Wondolowski also broke the MLS all-time scoring record, and now has 159 goals as the MLS goal king.
While Wondolowski was not always a fixture in Almeyda's lineup in 2019, he played his way into being a regular for much of the campaign.
Following San Jose's Decision Day presented by AT&T season finale on Sunday, Wondolowski noted he was not yet certain he would return for another season, although he said he did appreciate Almeyda's efforts to renew his love of playing.
