AMSTERDAM – Hard-luck RB Leipzig striker Terrence Boyd has suffered another setback, with an additional operation required to drain fluid from his surgically-repaired right knee.
The US forward originally was injured when he tore both his ACL and LCL in a 2.Bundesliga tilt against Alfredo Morales and Ingolstadt back in December 2014. The recovery period for those injuries included the additional agitation of a calf cyst, but Boyd was training on the side and expected back to full squad sessions just before this latest delay in his return.
"He comes back to Leipzig today, then he will start a recovery period," Red Bulls spokesman Benjamin Ippoliti told MLSsoccer.com on Monday afternoon. "He was training and on the way back, but after some days, the reaction of the knee was not so good."
As for when Boyd might make it back, a frustrated Leipzig will wait a while before setting any sort of target date this time.
"That's a difficult question," said Ippoliti. "Our physios will check it, but he probably will not be back to team training in this year. Maybe after the winter break he has a chance to come back."
Boyd, who got a late start due to injury after arriving in Leipzig during the summer of 2014, scored three times in eight appearances for the club prior to the double-ligament knee setback that began this extended layoff.
Without him, Leipzig are again battling in the promotion race. They stand in fifth place, only a single point shy of the promotion playoff spot and just four off the top spot through 10 rounds. They are unbeaten in six league games heading into Sunday's trip to face early pace-setters VfL Bochum.
