Josef Martinez is scoring goals at a pace effectively unmatched in the league’s history, and he’s racking up other milestones and honors along the way.
His latest gong: Week 15’s AT&T Goal of the Week prize.
Atlanta United’s Venezuelan sniper cruised to the top prize, with the Five Stripes faithful helping his snap header – his 13th of the season – in Saturday's 1-1 draw with New York City FC garner 70 percent of the vote.
Seattle's Nicolas Lodeiro came in second (14%) with his clutch strike vs. D.C. United. Houston Dynamo playmaker Tomas Martinez and San Jose Earthquakes legend Chris Wondolowski tied in third place (6%) and Chicago Fire star Bastian Schweinsteiger brought up the rear (4%).
As the 2018 MLS season enters its World Cup break, Martinez is the runaway Golden Boot leader with 14 goals, as he’s already padded his total with another header vs. Columbus Crew SC in a 2-0 road win on Wednesday night.
He collided with Artur on the play, however, and was substituted out of the match at halftime with what was feared a broken nose, raising questions about his availability for next week’s U.S. Open Cup match vs. Chicago on June 20.
