The final MLS Save of the Week award of the 2017 season was won in absolutely dominant fashion by Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who claimed a stunning 94 percent of the Week 33 vote.
Guzan won the award for his acrobatic stop on Jozy Altidore in the 21st minute of Atlanta’s 2-2 draw against Toronto FC on Sunday. Altidore ran unmarked onto a through ball in the left side of the box following some excellent build-up play by Toronto and chipped a shot that looked destined for the top corner, but Guzan reached back with his left hand and tipped the effort over the bar to deny his fellow US international.
This is the second straight Save of the Week win for Guzan, and the second straight week the veteran ‘keeper has demolished the field. He took a whopping 76 percent of the vote for his stunning Week 32 stop on New York’s Bradley Wright-Phillips in the Five Stripes’ scoreless draw at Red Bull Arena on Oct. 15.
Columbus backstop Zack Steffen finished second with three percent of the vote, Toronto ‘keeper Alex Bono won two percent of the tally and D.C.’s Steve Clark and New England’s Brad Knighton each collected one percent.
Guzan and Atlanta will look to continue their sparkling expansion season on Thursday, when they'll host Crew SC in the Eastern Conference Knockout Round of the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs (7 pm ET; ESPN2, UniMas in the US | TSN4, TVAS in Canada).
