Josef Martinez is alone at the top.
A week after scoring his record-tying 27th goal of 2018, the Atlanta United forward found the back of the net on Friday evening vs. Orlando City, bringing his total to 28 and lifting him into sole possession of the MLS single-season scoring record, which had stood since 1996.
Martinez briefly shared the record with its original holder, Roy Lassiter, as well as Chris Wondolowski (2012) and Bradley Wright-Phillips (2014), but now sits alone in the record books after a chipped finish over Joe Bendik in the second half of Wednesday's game, which gave Atlanta a 2-1 lead over their rivals.
The Venezuelan international, who set the record in just 26 games, will now have eight more games in which to add to it. His goals have also been crucial as Atlanta campaign for the Supporters' Shield, which they led by two points heading into Friday night's clash.
