David Beckham’s quest to bring Major League Soccer to Miami has a new twist.
According to a recent report from Reuters, Miami Beckham United -- the ownership group for the MLS expansion club in South Florida -- is considering a proposal to add a sports high school to the club's planned stadium project.
The proposal by Miami’s public education authority would see the school -- quickly dubbed “Beckham High” -- constructed as a part of stadium development at a potential site on a city-owned plot in the Little Havana neighborhood. As part of the deal, Miami Beckham United would be granted use of the land and county property tax exemptions.
“The idea of a partnership between Miami Beckham United, the city, county and school system benefiting children across Miami-Dade is exciting,” said Beckham spokesman Tadd Schwartz. "But we have a great deal of details to iron out before an agreement is finalized."
“I can say the concept of a ‘Beckham High’ resonates quite strongly with me,” Miami schools superintendent Alberto Carvalho added.
Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado announced in July that the city and Miami Beckham United had reached a tentative deal to construct a privately financed stadium near Marlins Park, at the site of the old Orange Bowl.
