The Vancouver Whitecaps hope to take the next step after losing to Toronto FC in last year's Canadian Championship final, but first have to take on Canadian Premier League spring season champion Cavalry FC in a two-legged third qualifying round beginning Wednesday at ATCO Field.
The second leg is set for BC Place July 24. The winner on aggregate meets Montreal Impact or York9 FC in the two-legged semifinals. The Whitecaps won the Canadian Championship once, lifting the Voyageurs Cup in 2015.
Cavalry FC
The first-year club reached the third qualifying round by edging Force FC, 3-2, in the second round. Dominique Malonga scored the dramatic equalizer, and away goal, with a stoppage-time penalty kick after Emery Weishman, on loan from FC Cincinnati, put Force in front three minutes into the second half. In the second leg, Calgary-based Cavalry rallied for a 2-1 win thanks to goals by Malonga and Sergio Camargo.
After capturing the CPL spring season, Cavalry opened the fall season with a 3-2 win over host Pacific FC Saturday. Camargo struck for a brace and Nico Pasquotti added a goal.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC
The Whitecaps enter the Canadian Championship this year on a five-match MLS winless streak, which includes back-to-back defeats.
On Saturday, Yordy Reyna scored inside five minutes, but an Andy Rose own goal and five unanswered strikes by the hosts sent LAFC on their way to a 6-1 victory at Banc of California Stadium, avenging a loss to the Whitecaps at BC Place earlier this year.
