It appears William Yarbrough has decided which country he wants to represent, choosing the United States over Mexico.
A week after US head coach Jurgen Klinsmann mentioned Yarbrough as a dual-national that could soon earn a look, the Club Leon goalkeeper said in a press conference Thursday that he has accepted a call-up to join the Americans for their European camp later this month. Yarborough, who was born in Mexico to Texan parents, had also been garnering consideration from El Tri manager Miguel Herrera in recent months.
"It's been confirmed, the call-up from the United States has arrived at the club for the games on March 25 and 31," said Yarbrough. "I'm happy, very thankful to [US coach Jurgen] Klinsmann for tracking me."
US Soccer, for its part, did not confirm nor deny the news, simply telling ESPN FC via a statement that Klinsmann's March camp roster will be announced on Sunday.
Yarbrough, who will celebrate his 26th birthday on Friday, has been a regular starter for Club Leon since spring 2013. He has made 68 starts for the Liga MX side since then, and helped the team win both the Apertura and Clausura titles in the 2013-14 campaign.
If he has indeed been called up, Yarbrough could make his debut for the Americans in one of their upcoming two friendlies against Denmark and Switzerland.
