The Colorado Rapids have signed goalkeeper William Yarbrough from Liga MX side Club Leon to a three-year contract and hold a club option for an additional year, the club announced Tuesday. The deal keeps the 31-year-old with Colorado through at least the 2023 season and possibly through 2024.

“We’re thrilled to be able to bring Will back to the club,” Colorado VP and general manager Padraig Smith said in a release. “Will is a proven winner and his leadership within the locker room was invaluable as we navigated an unprecedented season last year. Bringing him back on a permanent basis was one of our top priorities this offseason and reinforces what we believe to be one of the best goalkeeping groups in the league.”

Yarbrough spent the 2020 season with Colorado on a one-year loan from Leon, starting 14 of 18 regular-season matches and posting four clean sheets. He also started Colorado’s Round One match in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, a 3-0 exit against Minnesota United.

Before coming to Colorado, Yarbrough spent his entire pro career with Leon, making 203 appearances and winning two BBVA Liga MX titles. Born in Mexico to American parents, he’s earned three US men’s national team caps, last featuring in October 2016.

The Rapids return much of their young core for the 2021 MLS season, with Yarbrough one of several key veterans. Led by head coach Robin Fraser, they’re looking to make back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time since 2012-13.
