Just over a week removed from scoring a brace in the Columbus Crew's 3-0 win over the Seattle Sounders in the MLS Cup final, Lucas Zelarayan returned to his native Argentina to see a mural made to celebrate his accomplishment.
The mural was unveiled in Zelarayan's hometown of Cordoba, not only where he was born and raised, but where he made his start in the sport. He made his professional debut for Cordoba-based Belgrano in 2012 after making his way through the club's academy.
The mural is the square the city said Zelarayan first started playing soccer, and the square now also has a plaque that says "dreams that become reality" and thanks Zelarayan for spotlighting the area with his success in MLS.
The mural was unveiled during an event where Zelarayan was the guest of honor, and celebrations included giving children in the neighborhood sports equipment and Zelarayan receiving some maté from residents in addition to a mural.
Zelarayan was named MLS Cup MVP presented by Audi for his performance against the Sounders in which he became just the third player to score twice in the championship game. In his first season with the Crew since moving from Liga MX giants Tigres, Zelarayan was named MLS Newcomer of the Year.
