David Beckham shared an update on Monday about his ongoing efforts to identify a stadium site for a potential MLS expansion club in Miami, suggesting that news is forthcoming in the next few months.
Speaking to the media at an event announcing an expansion of his long-running role as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, the former LA Galaxy star admitted to some frustration with the delays in the stadium search, but predicted good news in the near future.
“Miami obviously doesn't have a stadium at the moment, and we'll continue to work hard on that,” Beckham told the BBC in London. “We're making some really good progress, some real positive progress, so at some point in the next couple of months there will be some announcements.
“So it's hard work, of course, but nothing in life is easy. So we're focusing on that and then we'll announce it when ready.”
Monday's event unveiled a new initiative dubbed 7: The David Beckham UNICEF Fund, which aims to target seven areas in which child hardship can be addressed in developing countries. Beckham has been a partner with the worldwide development organization for 10 years now, and plans to expand his efforts further in the decade to come.
Beckham's group have seen two proposed stadium sites fall through in Miami over the past year, but on Monday he reiterated his commitment to securing the proper venue for MLS's return to South Florida.
“I mean, delays are always frustrating, but to get it right, sometimes there are delays,” he said. “And we will get it right and it will happen. It's taken a little bit longer than we thought. But it will happen.”
