Marco Fabian notched his first goal as a Philadelphia Union player, paving the way for his new team to come back from a first-half deficit to defeat D.C. United, 2-1, in preseason play at Joe Dimaggio Sports Complex in Clearwater, Fla. on Wednesday evening.
Wayne Rooney opened the scoring in the 23nd minute, sprung by a Luciano Acosta pass from the center circle, allowing him to run free and chip his shot over Union keeper Andre Blake.
Despite several close calls in front of the DC goalmouth, the Union offense couldn't get themselves on the scoreboard in the first half. But they fixed that in the 60th minute when Fabian scored his first goal as part of the Union squad, converting a Haris Medunjanin blocked shot into an equalizer.
Then, 14 minutes later, Fafa Picault, in a substitute role, backheeled a pass toward the front of goal and an open Cory Burke, who fired the Union into the lead — a lead which would turn out to hold up.
