In terms of global name recognition, new D.C. United forward Wayne Rooney may blow United legend Jaime Moreno away, but the English newcomer still has the Bolivian's legacy to contend with.
Moreno is one of the most decorated players in D.C. and MLS lore, winning four MLS Cups, two U.S. Open Cups, the Concacaf Champions Cup and being named an MLS Best XI selection five times. He finished his career as the all-time leading MLS scorer in 2010, and to this day sits fourth all-time in scoring in league history.
In reflecting on the changes that have come to D.C. United since his playing days, Moreno marveled at the opening of Audi Field on Saturday (8 pm ET | TSN — Full TV & Streaming Info) with Univision's Emmanuel Quispe, saying the new venue is "beautiful."
But Moreno, when talking about the past successes and more recent struggles of D.C. United, who have only won one trophy this decade, the 2013 U.S. Open Cup, quipped that Rooney, expected to play a big role on and off the field for D.C., will have big shoes to fill. Make that a "heavy" jersey to wear.
"It's an honor that he wears my shirt, it's a little bit heavy, but let's see if he can stand it," Moreno said with a smile.
