D.C. United is climbing up the Eastern Conference table at just the right time, and Lamar Neagle is a big reason why.
On Tuesday, Neagle was named MLS Player of the Week for Week 30 by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) after his two goals led D.C. United to a massive 2-1 road victory over Toronto FC on Saturday.
Neagle, who has six goals in his last 272 minutes of action, scored the equalizer late in the first half, heading in a rebound attempt from point-blank range less than three minutes after Jozy Altidore opened the scoring for TFC.
Neagle’s game-winner came in the 58th minute when he broke behind the defense, received a perfectly placed through ball from Lloyd Sam and blasted it past Clint Irwin to the top shelf.
It was Neagle’s first brace since April 2015 and the third time a D.C. United player has earned MLS Player of the Week plaudits this season, following Patrick Mullins winning it in Week 25 and Fabian Espindola taking it home in Week 6.
Winners of their last three and unbeaten in five, Neagle and red-hot D.C. return home to face New York City FC on Sunday, October 16 (3pm ET, MLS LIVE) in the penultimate game of the regular season.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
