DC United's Wayne Rooney earns Week 25 Alcatel MLS Player of the Week nod

Wayne Rooney - Alcatel Player of the Week 25

After leading D.C. United to two wins in Week 25 and extending their winning streak to three straight, Wayne Rooney has been voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). It's the second straight week a D.C. player has won the honor, following Luciano Acosta's Week 24 nod.

The English icon scored two goals in Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat of the Portland Timbers, then put in another strong performance in Sunday’s 2-0 win over the New England Revolution, both of them at D.C.’s brand-new Audi Field home.

A summer signing from Everton, Rooney has three goals and three assists in his first eight MLS matches, and United have racked up a 5-2-1 record during that time after spending most of the season’s first half in the Eastern Conference basement.

After the Timbers seized an early 1-0 lead, Rooney clinically dispatched a Yamil Asad through ball in the 43rd minute to draw level D.C., then bagged his second via a curling, dipping free kick past goalkeeper Jeff Attinella in the 68th. The Englishman took five shots against the Revolution on Sunday.

United return to action on Sunday with a Heineken Rivalry Week visit to their old Atlantic Cup adversaries the New York Red Bulls (7 pm ET | FS1 – Full TV and streaming info).

The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is chosen each week of the regular season by members of the North American Soccer Reporters. The organization includes print, television, radio and online journalists who cover domestic men's soccer in the United States and Canada.
