Exports: Aron Johannsson to miss rest of Bundesliga season

Aron Johannsson, Werder Bremen

Aron Johannson’s disappointing season took a turn for the worse on Thursday, when Werder Bremen announced that they’ve ruled the US national team striker out for the season due to injury.

Johansson, who moved from Dutch club AZ Alkmaar to the Bundesliga side last summer, underwent hip surgery in October. He returned to training last month, but his recovery has apparently hit a snag, with Bremen general manager Thomas Eichen telling German outlet Bild that the club “have ruled [Johannsson] out for the season and are no longer planning with him.”

Johannsson, 25, scored two goals in six games for Bremen before undergoing surgery in the fall. The club currently sits in 14th place in the Bundesliga with 28 points, just one ahead of the relegation zone.

Thursday’s news raises questions about Johannsson’s availability for this summer’s Copa America Centenario. The US will play in the first match of the tournament against Colombia at Levi’s Stadium on June 3, less than three weeks after the end of the Bundesliga season on May 14.
