Three more teams locked up their MLS Cup Playoffs places this weekend, but chaos still reigned as teams fought to get above the red line. Matt and Ben join David as pulls the strings in midfield with Andrew away. The guys check in with D.C. United, who got the biggest win of the weekend over a fading Orlando City SC, and Patrick Mullins jumps on the phone to discuss his fight for MLS playing time, current goal-scoring form and favorite capital eateries ahead of a Wednesday clash with Columbus Crew SC (7:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE). Plus, Jordan Morris gets some more love, Ola Kamara’s star potential emerges and a Jozy Altidore PK shout get the once over.
That’s just the beginning. As always, MLS is gonna MLS, and the results are liable to shock the uninitiated. Colorado started scoring – finally! – but forgot to play defense. Not so surprising: Portland faltered on the road once again. No time to reflect too much, though, with four massive midweek games that could decide playoff fates for Seattle, Columbus and DC and spell doom for Orlando, Montreal or San Jose. On top of MLS action, Portland, FC Dallas and the Red Bulls have CCL action to deal with as well. The stakes are high.
In the mailbag, referees pick up assists, the guys discuss a USMNT manager shortlist post Jurgen Klinsmann (Doyle adds a surprise name), and Chicago Fire fans lament the lack of playing time for the kids.
