Minnesota United FC had to work for it, but prevailed in a penalty shootout to defeat FC Cincinnati on Wednesday in the fourth round of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup at Nippert Stadium.
The shootout, which went 3-1 in favor of the Loons, came following 120 minutes of scoreless soccer between the midwestern sides.
The game was tight, as both teams had chances but played a defense-first approach. While Minnesota dominated possession, 66 percent to 33 for Cincinnati, the remaining statistical categories were close. And in the end, wayward finishing from FCC left the door open for the visiting Minnesota, who obliged to bury more penalties in the shootout.
