After speculation he would switch his international allegiance, it appears Jesse Gonzalez will stay on his current track.
According to Ives Galarcep at Goal.com, the 20-year-old FC Dallas goalkeeper was reportedly extended an offer to join the US national team training camp by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, but after initially accepting – which was confirmed by US Soccer to MLSsoccer.com – Gonzalez had a change of heart and declined the offer, instead accepting an invitation to join Mexico's U-23 squad, with an eye toward the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Sources told MLSsoccer.com that Gonzalez never communicated that he wasn't attending the US camp, and his participation was anticipated. Another goalkeeper is expected to be added to the roster as a replacement.
Gonzalez, who has played for Mexico's youth teams, including at last year's FIFA U-20 World Cup, was born in the US and is therefore eligible to make a one-time national-team switch.
Until Gonzalez plays a competitive game with Mexico's senior team, he will remain eligible to make a switch to the US, so he could still join the US in the future.
The US will enter a training camp next week that will last until Feb. 6 and will include friendlies against Iceland and Canada.
