Tuesday was a record-breaking night for MLS in Canada.
TSN announced on Wednesday the Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs Eastern Conference Championship first leg match between the Montreal Impact and Toronto FC was watched by an average audience of more than 1 million viewers in Canada, and is the most-watched MLS game in the country's history, nearly doubling the previous record.
The game, an entertaining 3-2 win for the Impact, was watched by more than 3.6 million unique Canadian viewers on the night. Having two Canadian teams in the Eastern Conference Championship helped smash the old record, and 595,000 viewers on TSN and 429,000 on RDS combined to break the record, of 587,000 on TSN and RDS for Montreal and Toronto's playoff game in 2015.
TSN's release noted the viewing peak on Tuesday came in the final minute of regular time.
The second leg of the Eastern Conference Championship will be next Wednesday (7 pm ET) and will air on TSN1,3,4,5 and RDS in Canada (FS1 in the US).
