An Ignacio Piatti final act in MLS apparently isn't in the cards, with reports from Argentina indicating that the former CF Montréal star will sign with Argentine Primera Division side Racing.
According to The Athletic’s Paul Tenorio, the 36-year-old midfielder expressed interest in coming back to MLS after spending 2014-19 with CF Montréal. Nothing concrete emerged, though, and now the Argentine maestro appears set to remain in his home country.
While in MLS, Piatti netted 66 goals and 35 assists across 135 games (130 starts). Capable of playing wide or centrally, he was a two-time MLS Best XI selection and three-time MLS All-Star. He also was part of CF Montréal’s 2015 team that nearly won the Concacaf Champions League.
Injuries hampered Piatti’s final year with CF Montréal, however, and then he returned in 2020 to San Lorenzo, the club he previously competed for before shipping north. Piatti tallied one goal and one assist in 10 appearances across all competitions this past season with San Lorenzo, then became a free agent.
With Piatti reportedly set to sign with Racing, hopes of a late-career renaissance in MLS seem out of the picture. But there’s no denying that when at his peak, the Argentine was a complete game-changer and dynamic threat for CF Montréal.
