UPDATE, April 25: Toronto FC general manager Ali Curtis has spoken on the rumors of a potential return to the club for Victor Vazquez, and while he didn't confirm the move was imminent, he also didn't squash the possibility.
"We won't be signing any players at this moment, especially given the uncertainty and impact that COVID-19 is having on our league, and the global community," Curtis told The Toronto Sun. "With that said, things sometimes change quickly.
"Victor is a great guy and was a terrific player for TFC. I haven't spoken to him directly for some time. While Victor still remains part of the TFC family at the moment, we're focused on the current players on our roster, the staff, and managing through the challenges of the pandemic."
Could Victor Vazquez be returning to Toronto FC?
The former star midfielder for the Reds is evidently thinking about it, telling TSN's Kristian Jack that he misses his former stomping grounds of BMO Field and that he's been in communication about a potential return. Vazquez is currently playing for Umm Salal SC in Qatar.
Vazquez is 33 now, but he's certainly proven that he can produce in MLS.
He stuffed the statsheet to the tune of 16 goals and 25 assists in 52 games across two seasons for the Reds in 2017-2018. He also scored the team's second goal in its 2-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders in the 2017 MLS Cup final to cap off one of the greatest single seasons for any team in league history.
One initial obstacle to a Vazquez-TFC reunion, aside from the general uncertainty around transfer activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, is Toronto's position in the Allocation Ranking Order. Because TFC sold Vazquez to Qatari club Al-Arabi for a fee of greater than $500,000 back in January 2019, he is subject to Allocation should he sign again in MLS. Toronto currently sit 25th (second from bottom) in the Allocation Ranking Order, meaning they would have to make a significant move up in order to be in a position to re-sign Vazquez.
