It was expected to be an easy victory for Mexico, but their 2-1 win over New Zealand Wednesday in the Confederations Cup was anything but for Juan Carlos Osorio's men.
The victory lifted Mexico into a tie for the Group A standings with Portugal, which earlier in the day beat host Russia, 1-0. New Zealand was eliminated from the competition with one group game remaining.
Giovani dos Santos, the LA Galaxy's star attacker, started and played the entire game for Mexico in the midfield. He created a few chances, but was unable to get on the scoresheet. Kip Colvey, the San Jose Earthquakes defender, was on the bench but did not get into the game for New Zealand.
