After finishing second behind Mexico in Group A, Canada meet shock Group B winners Haiti in the first 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup quarterfinal clash at a sold-out NRG Stadium Saturday night. The winner advances to the semifinals to meet either Mexico or Costa Rica, who meet in the second quarterfinal in Houston.
This is the teams' third all-time meeting in the Gold Cup, with Canada winning both of the previous encounters. including 2-0 in the final game of the group stage in 2007 thank to a Dwayne De Rosario first-half brace.
Haiti
Haiti rallied for a stunning, and thrilling, 2-1 win over Costa Rica Monday at Red Bull Arena to clinch the top spot in a group for the first time in their Gold Cup history. An own goal by Djimy Bend Alexis put the Ticos in front on 13 minutes, but Duckens Nazon leveled from the penalty spot before Alexis became the hero with the 81st-minute winner.
Needing to win that third match to finish atop Group B, Les Grenadiers finished with an unblemished 3-0-0 mark, joining the United States and Mexico as the only teams to secure all nine available points. Haiti have never advanced past the quarterfinals in three previous appearances.
Canada
Canada clinched a sixth trip to the Gold Cup quarterfinals, and second consecutive, in record-breaking fashion Sunday following a 7-0 victory over Cuba at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
For the first time in Gold Cup history, two different players struck for a hat trick as Jonathan David and Lucas Cavallini accomplished the feat. Les Rouges netted the most goals they have ever scored in a Gold Cup match, posting their second group-stage victory. Canada finished second in Group A with six points, three behind Mexico, who won the head-to-head meeting 3-1.
