Andrew Wenger has gotten his Houston Dynamo career off to a fantastic start.
On Tuesday, he got a little recognition for his early-season success.
Wenger was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 2 of the 2016 MLS season after he recorded a goal and two assists in the Dynamo’s 5-0 blowout of Texas Derby rival FC Dallas at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, Wenger and midfielder Cristian Maidana were acquired by the Dynamo in a December trade with the Philadelphia Union. Wenger assisted on Houston’s first and third goals and scored the Dynamo’s fourth on Saturday, all coming in the game's first 30 minutes.
In addition to his exploits against Dallas, Wenger was also dangerous in the Dynamo’s opener against New England, finding the back of the net in Houston’s 3-3 home draw against the Revolution on March 6. The Duke product has two goals and two assists in his two games in 2016, already outstripping his 2015 totals, when he finished with one goal and a pair of helpers in 26 regular-season appearances for the Union.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. LA forward Mike Magee won the Week 1 award following his two-goal performance in the Galaxy’s win against D.C. United.
