Erick "Cubo" Torres hasn’t made a huge splash in Houston quite yet, but that hasn’t hurt his status with Mexico’s Olympic team.
The Dynamo forward earned a call on Tuesday to a camp for El Tri’s U-22 squad, one of 28 players called on Tuesday to a training camp that will run from Aug. 31-Sept. 8.
Mexico’s U-22s will play three matches during the nine-day camp, facing youth teams from Liga MX clubs Pumas and Cruz Azul on Sept. 4 and 8 and playing Panama’s U-22s on Sept. 6.
Former Real Salt Lake and current Chivas Guadalajara defender Carlos Salcedo was also called to the camp.
Torres has yet to start or register a goal or assist for Houston, but has subbed on in five straight games. The Dynamo are on a bye during the Mexico U-22 camp, and Torres would not miss any MLS action should he attend.
CONCACAF will hold its Olympic qualifying tournament from Oct. 1-13 in the US. Mexico will play in Group B at the tournament, facing Costa Rica and Haiti at the StubHub Center on Oct. 2 and 4 before facing off with Honduras in the group stage finale at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Oct. 7.
