STREAMING: ESPN+
For a second straight year, the Houston Dynamo host Western Conference foe Minnesota United FC in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. The match is set for Tuesday night at BBVA Stadium.
A year ago, Mauro Manotas scored the lone goal two minutes into the second half to lead the Dynamo to the quarterfinals for the third time in four years. They'd go on to beat the Philadelphia Union to win their first USOC title. The winner faces either FC Dallas or USL Championship side New Mexico United in the quarterfinals on July 10.
Romain Metanire scored in the 20th minute to lift the Loons to a 1-0 win at Allianz Field on May 25 in Houston and Minnesota's lone regular-season meeting thus far.
Houston Dynamo
The Dynamo survived a fourth-round scare, edging Austin Bold FC of the USL Championship, 3-2, Tuesday night at home. The defending champions imposed their will early, racing out to a 3-0 lead on first-half goals by Tomas Martinez, Ronaldo Pena and Matias Vera.
But Austin roared back after halftime as goals by Xavier Baez and Isaac Promise eight minutes apart early in the second half pulled the visitors to within one. That would be as close as they'd get, though.
Minnesota United FC
The Loons avenged a lopsided fourth-round loss in 2017 by beating Sporting Kansas City, 4-1, at Allianz Field last Wednesday.
Goals by Angelo Rodriguez and Gerso Fernandes meant the match was deadlocked heading into the second half, which is when Minnesota United sparked to life. Ethan Finlay scored one minute after halftime and Darwin Quintero struck for a brace in a 12-minute span to secure safe passage into the Round of 16 for a second straight year.
