The Houston Dynamo acquired veteran midfielder Eric Alexander from Montreal on Friday, in exchange for general and targeted allocation money.
The move is the second by the Impact in recent weeks and clears a roster space while adding more allocation cash during the summer transfer window, indicating that big developments could be ahead for the Quebec side. On July 12, Montreal dealt second-year forward Cameron Porter to Sporting Kansas City in exchange for left back Amadou Dia.
“We’re pleased to welcome a player of Eric’s quality to our club,” Dynamo vice president and general manager Matt Jordan said. “He’s a confirmed midfielder in this league, who brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success. He’ll be a strong addition to our roster as we begin our push into the second half of the season.”
The 28-year-old Alexander has made 178 career appearances in MLS – regular and postseason – since joining the league in 2010 with FC Dallas. He appeared in all 34 regular-season games for the New York Red Bulls when they won the 2013 Supporters Shield and started all five MLS Cup playoff matches for New York in 2014, following a regular season in which he recorded a career-high nine assists.
Alexander also appeared in 80 consecutive regular-season matches from Oct. 27, 2012 to June 13, 2015. He started 12 matches for the Impact this year, recording one assist. He also has two appearances with the US national team, most recently in 2014.
“This transaction gives us some salary cap flexibility for potential changes to keep improving the roster in the short- and long-term,” said Impact technical director Adam Braz. “We would like to thank Eric for his services, and we wish him all the best going forward.”
