Luis Robles is known for keeping a relatively even temperament on the playing field, not surprising since the New York Red Bulls goalkeeper has been among the best in the league at his position over the past few years. But news that former teammate Jeremy Vuolo was ready to propose to his girlfriend Jinger Duggar – now that surprised him.
Vuolo, who was a backup goalkeeper with the Red Bulls in 2012, recently proposed to Jinger, a member of the Duggar family of reality television acclaim. Robles appeared on this week’s episode of one of the Duggar's shows, TLC's Counting On, with the cameras catching his discussion with his former teammate.
There weren't any cameras around for a phone conversation between Vuolo and Robles this past spring, in which Vuolo talked about the woman who would become his fiancée.
“It went from a phone call to ‘Hey I think we’re going to start courting’ to ‘We’re coming out to New Jersey, I think I might propose.’ It was all very exciting,” Robles told MLSsoccer.com on Friday.
Vuolo did come back out to the tri-state area in August and with Jinger watched the Red Bulls beat New York City FC at Red Bull Arena. Ironically, after the game as the couple stood near the locker room area, Jinger met captain Dax McCarty, nicknamed the "Ginger Ninja."
As for Robles, he played a key role in the engagement, holding onto the ring for Vuolo who proposed in a rooftop occasion while in New York City. Robles’ oldest son, Eli, nearly spoiled the whole plan when he found the ring, but Robles and his wife had to do their best “to convince Eli what he saw isn’t what he saw.”
This past weekend when the Red Bulls where on the international break, Robles and his family were down in Arkansas, visiting the Duggar clan. So it sounds like he might be appearing on another episode of the show.
If you can’t wait that long to see Robles in action, the goalkeeper and his Red Bull teammates host Columbus Crew SC on Sunday (3 pm ET; MLS LIVE) in a match that could help New York claim the Eastern Conference.
