Could Mexico be without two of their most important players in next month’s CONCACAF Cup?
El Tri captain Andres Guardado is already out for the Oct. 10 Confederations Cup playoff against the US after suffering an ankle injury with PSV Eindhoven last week that will keep him out for over a month.
The news got worse for Mexico on Sunday, when alternate captain Rafa Marquez limped off in the 70th minute of Hellas Verona’s 1-1 draw in Serie A action against Atalanta due to a right groin strain. The 36-year-old former New York Red Bull center back will undergo tests this week to determine the severity of his injury; Hellas Verona have already confirmed that he’ll miss Wednesday’s clash against Inter Milan.
Guardado and Marquez are two of Mexico’s most experienced players, combining for 246 international appearances, with Marquez captaining Mexico in the last four World Cups before Guardado took over the armband following El Tri’s run in Brazil.
