Inter Miami defender Christian Makoun got a Mother’s Day surprise last Thursday while being interviewed by Univision for a weekend feature.
Makoun’s mom, Hayde Reyes, joined the Zoom call after a club official set up the unexpected virtual reunion. The Venezuela youth international was overjoyed at the occasion, as he outlined in a separate Miami Herald piece.
“It was a beautiful, special moment to see that surprise they had planned,” Makoun, 20, said. “It filled my soul to know she heard how I feel about her, and I hope I made her Mother’s Day a little happier. The first thing she told me is that she loved me. We had a very nice conversation.”
Makoun is used to being away from his mom, after spending last year on loan at Juventus and moving to the expansion club ahead of the 2020 MLS season. Add in the general state of the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, and heartfelt moments often occurred virtually this Mother’s Day.
The emotions still ran high, though.
“I will forever be indebted to her,” Makoun, who made his MLS debut March 1 against LAFC, said. “I would not be where I am without her.”
