TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Extension
Inter Miami and winger Lewis Morgan have agreed to a contract extension, the club announced Monday. The deal was completed with Targeted Allocation Money.
Morgan, 24, was the club's top performer in a largely disappointing season, being named club MVP after leading the team in goals and assists. He scored five times and racked up eight assists while starting all 23 matches after being acquired from Celtic. He was tied for first in MLS in big chances created (14) and was second in both total chances create (65) and expected assists (7.93).
“Lewis is a player who stood out in his first-ever season in MLS, not only for his performance on the field, but also positive attitude and willingness to be a team player at all times,” sporting director & CSO Chris Henderson said in a club statement. “We’re thrilled to sign him to a new contract and reaffirm our commitment to valuable players who contribute to the team and proudly represent Inter Miami.”
Morgan will again be a key player for Miami as they head into year two with some major changes, with Henderson the club's new chief soccer officer and Phil Neville taking over as head coach. The club will also get a full season out of global stars like Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi, who joined over the summer.
“I appreciate the opportunity that the club gave to me as a player to come over here to a new league," Morgan said. "Hopefully I was able to deliver some performances and repay some of that faith, and that’s something that I want to continue to do from here on out,” said Morgan. “I’m really looking forward to this season and hopefully building on what we did last year. We know we have a talented group here and we’re looking forward to getting to work.”
