The days of Landon Donovan and Jermaine Jones suiting up for the US men's national team against Mexico are firmly in the past. But the 37-year-olds aren’t quite yet done sticking it to their archrivals from south of the border.
The U.S. National Arena Soccer Team, featuring both Jones and Donovan, downed Mexico 7-5 on Friday night. The game took place at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.
In the twilights of their careers, Jones and Donovan both play in the Major Arena Soccer League, respectively suiting up for the Ontario Fury and San Diego Sockers. The league has 18 teams split across four divisions, with the Milwaukee Wave as reigning champions.
Jones, originally born in Germany to an American father, accrued 69 appearances for the USMNT throughout his career, with a 2014 World Cup group-stage scorcher against Portugal the clear highlight. He also made 67 appearances in MLS across the regular season and playoffs, propelling the New England Revolution to a 2014 MLS Cup appearance. He had stints with the Colorado Rapids and LA Galaxy, too.
As for Donovan, he earned 157 caps for the USMNT and scored 57 goals. He won MLS Cup six times, two MLS Supporters’ Shields and a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, highlighted by spells with the San Jose Earthquakes and Galaxy. The MLS MVP award is named after Donovan.
