Atlanta United forward Josef Martinez added two more goals to his growing MLS Golden Boot lead Saturday against FC Dallas, bringing his total to 17 goals this season. Now that most teams have crossed the midpoint of their schedule, it's fair to note Martínez has matched or outdone the pace of the three players who share the all-time single-season scoring record.
Both Bradley Wright Phillips (2014) and Chris Wondolowski (2012) matched that pace in their record-tying seasons. The third man in their triumverate, Tampa Bay Mutiny striker Roy Lassiter, made a late charge in the league's debut campaign after only posting 13 goals through his first 19 matches that season.
Martínez previously tied Stern John and Diego Serna for most career hat tricks (5), and was the fastest to do so by 21 games.
