Death, taxes and Josef Martinez setting MLS records.
The Atlanta United marksman extended his all-time mark for most consecutive games with an MLS goal to 11, finding the target with an audacious curler against the Portland Timbers on Sunday night. That strike ran away with the award for AT&T Goal of the Week for Week 24, taking just under 83% of the total votes for an insurance tally in Atlanta's 2-0 victory.
Martinez's strike, coming after Julian Gressel's incisive feed, gave him 21 goals for the season and received nearly 10 times the votes of the next-closest vote getter. That was Benny Feilhaber, whose turning half-volley strike leveled the game in Sporting Kansas City's 2-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes and received about 9% of the vote.
Marc Rzatkowski's belter for the New York Red Bulls took third with about 5 percent of the vote. Pedro Santos, the Columbus Crew SC winger-turned-playmaker, received 3% of the vote for his second straight GotW nominee. And Valentin Castellanos' equalizer in what eventually finished a 4-1 victory for New York City FC over FC Cincinnati rounded out the voting with 1%.
