After three straight wins, the LA Galaxy have moved from below the playoff line to third in the Western Conference, one point below second-place Minnesota United. After clinching an Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs berth, they now eye a home game when they meet a Vancouver Whitecaps side already eliminated from playoff contention.
The Galaxy (16-13-3) clinched a postseason spot following a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium Wednesday. Cristian Pavon broke the scoreless stalemate five minutes into the second half and Zlatan Ibrahimovic made it 2-0 in the 80th minute with his 28th goal of the season. Nedum Onuoha gave RSL a late lifeline, but the hosts couldn't find the equalizer.
The Whitecaps (7-15-10) are coming off a 1-1 home draw against Columbus Crew SC with Fredy Montero leveling in the fourth minute of stoppage time, canceling out Gyasi Zardes' 18th-minute penalty kick conversion.
Daniel Steres and Ibrahimovic scored eight minutes apart in the second half to lift the Galaxy to a 2-0 win April 5 at BC Place in the first meeting this season between the teams.
