A year removed from a magical run to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals in their inaugural season, LAFC host the San Jose Earthquakes in the final Round of 16 showdown Thursday night at Banc of California Stadium.
The winner of this first USOC showdown of Western Conference faces either the LA Galaxy or Portland Timbers in the quarterfinals on July 10.
LAFC
LAFC picked up in the U.S. Open Cup where they left off in the league with a resounding 3-0 fourth-round win over Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium last Tuesday night.
Carlos Vela set the tone, as he often does, with an eighth-minute goal. Lee Nguyen made it 2-0 in the 64th minute and Adama Diomande closed out the scoring in second-half stoppage time to send the runaway Supporters' Shield leaders comfortably into the Round of 16 again.
San Jose Earthquakes
The Earthquakes had a decisively more difficult road to the Round of 16, knocking off Sacramento Republic 4-3 in a wild shootout at Avaya Stadium. The fireworks started early with the teams combining for three goals in the opening 13 minutes. When the smoke cleared it was Sacramento with a 2-1 lead.
Cristian Espinoza leveled from the penalty spot in the 38th minute and Vako struck twice inside the final 12 minutes to extend the Quakes lead, before Drew Skundrich struck for Sacramento deep in stoppage time.
