Marco Fabian made his Philadelphia Union debut in the club's first competitive match of 2019 against Toronto FC, and didn't take long to make his mark.
Head coach Jim Curtin inserted his new star Designated Player immediately against TFC, starting at the tip of a 4-4-2 diamond formation just underneath forwards Fafa Picault and Cory Burke.
Although the Union fell 3-1 in the contest, Fabian showed why he'll be a focal point for the Union in 2018, directing the Union attack and netting his first goal for his new club from the penalty spot.
He also clashed regularly with his longtime US rival, Toronto FC's Michael Bradley, who earned a yellow card for a foul on the Mexican midfielder.
Fabian joined the Union this offseason from Bundesliga club Frankfurt, signing on February 8.
Prior to moving to Germany, Fabian played for eight years in his native Mexico, coming up through the academy system of Chivas Guadalajara and debuting for the club’s first team in late 2007. Across all competitions, he made a total of 232 appearances for the club, scoring 57 goals while adding 36 assists.
Fabian has 42 caps and nine goals for the Mexican national team on the senior level, and was a contributor off the bench in both the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups.
