A year after their deepest run in the U.S. Open Cup by reaching the quarterfinals, Orlando City SC hope to take the first step toward taking the next step when they take on host Memphis 901 FC at Mike Rose Soccer Complex Wednesday night.
This is the first meeting between the sides.
Memphis 901 FC
In their inaugural season in the USL Championship, Memphis 901 FC defeated the New York Red Bulls U-23, 3-1, in their debut U.S. Open Cup match in the second round. After falling behind five minutes after kickoff, Cameron Lindley leveled three minutes later and Josh Morton added a brace to send the squad to the third round.
There, they cruised past fellow USL Championship squad Hartford Athletic, 4-0. Marc Burch opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute, Jochen Graf scored a goal in each half and Morgan Hackworth closed the scoring in the 83rd minute.
Orlando City SC
The Lions enter this year's competition with convincing wins in two of their last three league contests, including a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo on June 1. Nani scored his 100th professional goal in the 27th minute and Tesho Akindele and Will Johnson added goals six minutes apart late in the first half.
A year ago, Orlando City defeated Miami United FC of the NPSL, 3-0, in the fourth round before advancing 4-2 in a penalty-kick shootout after playing D.C. United to a 1-1 draw in the Round of 16. The Lions USOC run ended in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Union.
