Mexico may have been dealt a huge blow on Tuesday, when captain Andres Guardado had to leave PSV Eindhoven’s UEFA Champions League win at Manchester United after suffering an ankle injury.
Guardado left the match – which will long be remembered for a gruesome leg injury to Manchester United’s Luke Shaw – with PSV leading 2-1 after turning his left ankle following a collision with United’s Chris Smalling.
UPDATE:PSV confirmed Wednesday that Guardado suffered ligament damage to his ankle and will likely miss a few weeks. In a release, the team said Guardado underwent an MRI scan after the match and will undergo another scan once swelling subsides to determine exactly how long he’ll be out of action.
The 28-year-old star midfielder, who won the Golden Ball as the best player at this summer’s Gold Cup, was named earlier on Tuesday to Mexico’s 35-man provisional roster for the Oct. 10 CONCACAF Cup against the US at the Rose Bowl. He has 21 goals in 119 career appearances with El Tri.
