Mexico began their Copa America campaign on Friday with a disappointing 0-0 draw against Bolivia in Viña del Mar, Chile.
Former New York Red Bulls Designated Player Rafa Marquez started and played 64 minutes as Mexico's captain. While the defense held up their end of the bargain in the game, Mexico's attack lacked the final incisive shot, though there were promising moments from winger Jesus "Tecatito" Corona and substitute Javier Aquino on the flanks in the attack.
Mexico had a scare about 15 minutes in, as a shot from Ricardo Pedriel beat Mexican goalkeeper Jesus Corona, but it bounced off the near post.
In the 67th minute, Corona had a pinpoint cross for substitute Raul Jimenez, but the header flashed wide of the far post.
A key play of the game came with just over 10 minutes left, as Aquino was tripped while making a run in the box by Bolivian defender Leonel Morales, but the referee waved off Mexico's appeals for a penalty.
Mexico, currently tied for second in Group A at the Copa America, will next face tournament hosts Chile on Monday in Santiago. Chile defeated Ecuador 2-0 in the opening game on Thursday.
