David Beckham’s prospective ownership group may be set to shift its focus to a new stadium site in Miami as the former MLS star continues his quest for an expansion team in the city.
On Tuesday, the Miami Herald reported that a Miami-Dade School Board vote on a proposed stadium next to Marlins Park in Little Havana has been postponed. Beckham and the Miami-Dade School Board were set to partner on the project.
“I think we are out of time," Miami-Dade schools superintendent Alberto Carvalho told the paper.
Representatives from Miami Beckham United, the ownership group led by Beckham, indicated that several small property owners in the proposed stadium’s footprint have asked for “completely unreasonable” prices for their land, which has thrown a wrench into the project.
With the Marlins Park site in jeopardy, Miami Beckham United partner Tim Leiweke made some hopeful comments on Tuesday about a different site elsewhere in Miami.
“I think we have found a site,” Leiweke said on CNBC. “It’s probably different than what people think we’re doing, but we’re going to know in the next several days.”
The Little Havana site, where Major League Baseball's Miami Marlins play, was the latest proposed stadium location after plans for the project at PortMiami and on land adjacent to American Airlines Arena, home of the NBA's Miami Heat, fell through.
