Former Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron continued his hot start to the season during Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup third-round match Wednesday against Morecambe FC.
Almiron scored in the 20th minute to make it 2-0, but not before he assisted Joelinton’s opener in the 5th minute to propel Newcastle to a 7-0 win. The Paraguayan midfielder now has one goal and three assists through Newcastle’s first four games of the 2020-21 season, reinforcing his importance to the squad.
Renowned for his left foot, Almiron turned to his right when setting up Joelinton’s goal, squaring the ball across the box for the striker to finish. As for the goal, Almiron latched onto a through ball, rounded the Morecambe goalkeeper and smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Morecambe are in League Two, while Newcastle are starting their fourth straight year in the Premier League. Since joining the Magpies midway through the 2018-19 season, the 26-year-old has been an increasing offensive threat.
Almiron remains the highest-priced outgoing transfer in MLS history, moving to Newcastle two winters ago for a reported $27 million. He spent two years with the Five Stripes, recording 21 goals and 28 assists in 62 appearances, all while leading Atlanta to an MLS Cup triumph in just their second season in the league.
