Minnesota United FC will look for their first win against Sporting Kansas City in the U.S. Open Cup when the Western Conference rivals meet at Allianz Field Wednesday night.
While the Loons are coming off their best run in the USOC by reaching the Round of 16 before losing to eventual champion Houston Dynamo, Sporting Kansas City have won four titles, tied with the Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders, for most by an MLS club.
Minnesota United FC
Minnesota United enter the USOC on a three-match losing streak, including a 1-0 defeat to the Colorado Rapids Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Kei Kamara scored the lone goal in the 29th minute.
Last year, the Loons knocked off future MLS foe FC Cincinnati in the fourth round, advancing on penalty kicks following a scoreless stalemate. In the Round of 16, Mauro Manotas scored the lone goal four minutes into the second half as the Dynamo won, 1-0, at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Sporting Kansas City
Sporting enter the USOC off consecutive road draws, including a 2-2 tie against Toronto FC Friday night with Felipe Gutierrez scoring both Sporting goals from the penalty spot.
A year ago, Sporting Kansas City also fell to the Dynamo, dropping a 4-2 decision in the quarterfinals. Sporting have won each of the previous three meetings with Minnesota United in the U.S. Open Cup, including a 4-0 victory in the 2017 fourth round with Ike Opara and Gerso scoring late in the first half and Dom Dwyer and Daniel Salloi adding second-half goals.
