Minnesota United are making changes for the upcoming campaign, and that includes one player, Johan Venegas, heading out on a loan to Costa Rican side Saprissa for the entire 2018 MLS season, announced by the team on Friday.

The 29-year-old was one of the notable additions for the Loons' inaugural MLS roster last season, but after starting well, playing in 12 of the first 13 games, he fell out of favor with head coach Adrian Heath as the season wore on. All told, he made 22 appearances for Minnesota United in 2017, scoring two goals and adding five assists.

“We think this is the best environment for Johan as he continues preparations for the World Cup,” said sporting director Manny Lagos in a team statement. “We hope he does well and has a successful World Cup.”

Venegas had a strong year in 2017 for the Costa Rican national team, helping them qualify for the World Cup. Although he'll be returning to his native country, this will be his first time playing for Saprissa, one of the traditional powerhouses of Costa Rican soccer.

Minnesota United open their 2018 MLS regular season on March 3 on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes.
