TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
Minnesota United have signed forward Aaron Schoenfeld from Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Israeli Premier League, the club announced Wednesday. The club acquired his MLS rights from Columbus Crew SC in exchange for a second round 2021 MLS SuperDraft pick and potential incentive-based considerations.
Schoenfeld, 29, spent the last three years with Maccabi Tel Aviv where he had nine goals and 11 assists across 71 appearances. Prior to that, he had five goals and three assists in 51 appearances (14 starts) with the Crew from 2012-15.
"He’s a little bit different than what we have: he’s 6-foot-4, he’s very good with his back to the goal, he’s good coming on late in games if we need to put balls in the box," head coach Adrian Heath said in a statement. "We feel as though he was great value for the money and — having worked with him before because we tried to sign him in Orlando — he’s a great kid and we think he’ll fit into what we’re trying to build here”
Schoenfeld is the club's third forward on the roster, alongside Mason Toye and Luis Amarilla. Toye is the only forward left from 2019, as this offseason has seen Darwin Quintero, Angelo Rodriguez and Abu Danladi all exit the club.
“Aaron give us extra strength and depth at the forward position,” Heath said. “He’s been in the league, he’s experienced. And we know that during the year, Mason [Toye] will be at the Olympics and the strength and depth is going to be necessary. Between Aaron, [Luis] Amarilla and Mason, we feel as though we’re in a really good spot."
