Atletico Madrid, this year's opponent for the 2019 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target, opened their summer transfer window with a bang, signing Mexican international Hector Herrera and highly-rated Portuguese prospect Joao Felix. Most recently, they added England fullback Kieran Trippier from Tottenham.
A veteran of two World Cups for El Tri, Herrera arrives at Atleti on a free transfer after playing six seasons as a regular at FC Porto, helping the side to the 2017-18 Portuguese league title. The midfielder has also played in 41 UEFA Champions League matches during his time there.
As one of the veterans left off manager Tata Martino's Mexico Gold Cup squad, Herrera would figure to be fully available for the begining of Atleti's preseason, barring injury, including the All-Star Game on July 31.
Meanwhile, Atleti paid $143 million for the transfer of the 19-year-old Felix, who arrives after scoring 15 goals in his first season with Portuguese giant Benfica's first team.
The fee is the fifth-most expensive in history.
Trippier has been a regular on the Tottenham backline for a few years, joining the club in 2015. He was England's first choice right back at the 2018 World Cup, when the youthful side reached the semifinals.
Atletico Madrid will play the MLS All-Stars on July 31 at Orlando City Stadium in the 2019 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target. The week's events begin on Saturday, July 27.
