Erick "Cubo" Torres's future in Major League Soccer will remain in discussion.
That's the official word from the league after the December 15 deadline regarding the Mexican international -- who has been on loan from Chivas de Guadalajara since the summer of 2013 -- passed without an agreement completed.
“Over the past several weeks, MLS has been engaged in discussions with Erick Torres and Chivas de Guadalajara regarding the league’s option to acquire his contract," the league said in a statement on Tuesday. "Although no agreement has been concluded, these discussions are continuing.”
Torres, 21, joined Chivas USA on loan from Liga MX club CD Guadalajara in July 2013. He had an immediate impact upon his arrival in Southern California, scoring scored seven goals in 15 appearances in the second half of the 2013 season.
He followed up his impressive MLS introduction in 2013 with an even better 2014. This past season, Cubo struck 15 goals -- tied for seventh in the 2014 Budweiser Golden Boot list -- and enjoyed a six-match scoring streak in June and July.
Cubo's prolific scoring with Chivas USA earned him a call-up to the Mexican national team by manager Miguel Herrera. He made his senior debut in a friendly against Bolivia in September, then scored his first goal for El Tri in a 1-0 friendly win over Panama in October.
Since the MLS season's end, Torres has been training with Chivas de Guadalajara and starring for the Mexican Under-21 squad in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico.
